Do you end up having a lot of homework to do Sunday evening? Do you wish you could hang out with other people doing their homework the night before school? Come and bring your homework to Nathan & Leslie's house Sundays from 4:00 pm - 6:30ish (right before youth group time). Leslie will cook a yummy dinner, and Nathan is available for help with Science & Math. Let's motivate each other! Contact Leslie with any questions.
Wednesday Evenings - Darleen Ortega leads a high school small group in the library from 6:30-8:15. "What if God was one of us? Just a slob like one of us?" The award-winning TV series explored that musical question via the adventures of a high school student, Joan, who begins having encounters with God, who appears to her in various forms, ranging from a cute boy on the bus to a grave school-age girl to a sarcastic older woman to a cafeteria worker to a Goth teenager. Joan wonders if she is crazy--and yet God finds ways to engage her, and she responds with her real self, including all her questions and her snarky attitude. God always manages to respond in kind.
The series is a wonderful basis for exploring the tough questions that plague us as humans--especially in high school. Why does God allow terrible things to happen? Why does God appear to answer some questions and not others? How can one possibly help a person who seems to be a lost soul? Does God really talk to human beings? Why doesn't God make the answers clearer?
Bible Quizzing - If your high schooler is interested in studying I and II Corinthians with a group of their peers, and travel to Metolius Friends Church, Twin Rocks Friends Camp in Rockaway, Oregon, Sherwood Friends Church and Greenleaf Friends Church (Idaho) then let Leslie know and she will connect you with a team compiled of Newberg Friends & North Valley Friends high school youth.
Sunday School - Emily Smith is leading Sunday School this fall. She will ask the high schoolers which book they might like to read and possibly have Sunday School at a coffee shop. For the first two weeks (Sept. 13 & 20) the high schoolers will meet at North Valley to discuss which book they might like to read and the structure of Sunday School (like which coffee shop to meet at!) Sunday School meets on Sundays from 9:30-10:30am.
